Coal on the ropes: In 2016, coal generated twice the electricity as renewables. Now, four short years later, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects renewable energy generation will outpace coal by the end of the year.

"Coal is facing a triple whammy this year as renewables grow, demand shrinks, and natural gas stays cheap," Daniel Cohan, an environmental engineering professor at Rice University told Inside Climate News.
